I got hooked on Serial a while ago. I’ve listened to the whole podcast once before. I’m currently listening to it again at work, and I’m just as hooked now as I was before. It’s hard to think that this is a true story, not a work of fiction. It reels you in just like a good detective story. You follow along with Sarah Koenig, the host and journalist, as she discovers details about the case. It makes you feel like an active member of the investigation, and I like that new participatory entertainment.
In case you’re not familiar with Serial, it’s a podcast series about the murder of Hae Min Lee. Hae was a high school student who was murdered in Baltimore in 1999. Hae’s ex-boyfriend Adnan Syed was arrested and charged with first-degree murder. He was found guilty and is serving out a life sentence. Family friends of Adnan’s contacted Sarah Koenig asking her to look into the case. Each episode you get deeper and deeper into the story, and you start trying to figure it out yourself. There are definite twists and turns throughout the podcast. I love how Sarah gets interviews from everyone…even Adnan. It’s amazing to hear the story from the supposed bad guy’s perspective.
Now honestly, I don’t really know if Adnan did it or not. Part of me thinks that he didn’t do it. Lots of things seem very circumstantial. Plus Adnan seems like a pretty decent guy, all things considered. But at the same time, part of me thinks he did it. His alibi is so sketchy and inconsistent. It’s just so hard to pass judgment on this.
If you’re interested in true crime series, definitely check Serial out. The whole first season is available, do you don’t have to wait to find things out. They’re currently working on a second season with a brand new case. Hopefully it’ll come out soon and you can be just as hooked as I am!
